TRAIL FRIENDS 2007 WORK PROJECTS
HIKING TRAILS
Baxter State Park, a wilderness and forest area of 209,501 acres, was a gift to the People of the State of Maine from former Gov. Percival P. Baxter. The Park is a paradise for nature enthusiasts with an abundance of natural diversity. The Park was intended by Baxter to be "available for those who love nature and are willing to walk and make an effort to get close to nature." Our hiking trails are very primitive, with many rocks and roots, even on the flattest terrain. Visitors should have sturdy footwear and be prepared for obstacles including boulders and stream crossings. Please consult an up to date map for elevation gains or stream crossings on trails. Please note: no ADA modifications have been made on our wilderness trails, they are maintained in a natural state as a wilderness. We hope you enjoy the challenges presented by the Park trails as you explore the wilderness as Percival Baxter envisioned it.
In times of high use, parking limits will be in place for trailheads, please read our parking limits page for more information. Information on day use reservations for Maine residents is also available on this page.
Proper gear should be carried for hiking on Park trails. Please read our hiking tips for suggestions.
Please note, BSP rangers do not provide pick-ups, drop-offs or shuttles of any sort. Please arrange ahead of time for your own transportation or seek out a local shuttle service if you need assistance with in-Park travel.
Please help us protect this area by following Leave-No-Trace guidelines and practicing wilderness ethics in the Park.

*CUT-OFF TIME APPLIES ONLY TO GOING TO THE SUMMIT OR ABOVE TREELINE.
If departing before 7:00 AM:
The weather forecast and Class Day designation for climbing Katahdin will be determined at 7:00 AM. All hikers are encouraged to wait to find out the Class Day notification before proceeding above treeline. However, any hikers that want to climb prior to 7:00 AM can do so at their own discretion, as long as the previous day was not a Class IV. Regardless of departure time or trailhead used, all hikers must register before climbing. Hikers planning to climb before 7:00 AM are urged to check with rangers and check the weather forecast and most recent Class Day, posted at all Park ranger stations, the night before a pre-7 AM departure.
Note:
It is the policy of Baxter State Park to permit climbing on Katahdin as many days as possible. While Katahdin should be closed during hazardous weather conditions, it should not be closed when conditions are not truly hazardous.
MAJOR TRAILS
There are 46 mountain peaks and ridges, 18 of which exceed an elevation of 3,000 feet, the highest being Baxter Peak at 5,267 feet. The park maintains about 200 miles of trails. The information contained in this brief introduction to the Park is not adequate for extended hiking or climbing. Guides and maps give detailed information and will help make your trip a safe and enjoyable one. For your own safety, do not leave the Park Tote road without a detailed map of the area to be traversed. Maps are sold at Campgrounds, Millinocket Headquarters, the Visitor Center at Togue Pond, and by mailing in or calling Millinocket Headquarters. A listing of maps available at the Park can be found on this web site or your favorite book store/internet vendor.
