***Must stay the night before either at Russell Pond, Pogy Pond, Chimney Pond, Wassataquoik Stream, Wassataquoik Lake Island or Little Wassataquoik Lake.

NO OPEN FIRES PERMITTED AT DAVIS POND, due to accumulated environmental degradation.

The policy for use of backcountry sites allows for advance reservations to be made thru the mail or in person at Baxter Park Headquarters in Millinocket. Reservation may be made FOR ONLY ONE NIGHT AT DAVIS POND AND FOR ONLY TWO NIGHTS AT WASSATAQUOIK ISLAND.

It is recommended that backpackers using outlying sites limit themselves to ten (10) miles between sites. A detailed map is recommended for planning & extended hiking in Baxter State Park.

Please be advised that cut-off times have been established for leaving trailheads to hike into backcountry sites

Allow 4 - 5 hours of daylight if leaving for Hudson or N.W. Cove

2:00 p.m. - Leaving for Russell Pond and surrounding areas, May - August

5:00 p.m. - Leaving for Chimney Pond, May - August

As daylight hours shorten in the fall, posted cut-off time is earlier for these areas. Please verify these cut-off times with the reservation office and make your plans accordingly.
